Quantum Computers – 90SS Ep. 7

Play episode

Hello Everyone, and welcome back to 90ss, I’m Michael Tung I’ll be your host for today. In this episode we are going to be covering quantum computers: what it is and some of its uses. Whenever we talk about quantum, its usually something small, reliable and happens very very fast. In the case of computing, the computers are able to process information or in a lot of cases calculations very quickly. As of now, however, these computers are not small at all. But then again modern day computers are tiny compared to some of the first computers in the 1980s. Recently, Google was able to create a computer that was able to make 53 qubits or quantum bits. A qubit is one bit of information inside the quantum computer: with 53 qubits, the computer can be at 0 and 1 in the same time. 0 and 1 refers to the on and off “switch” that computers use to understand bits of information. This in between zone allows the computer to be much more powerful than a regular computer. Once a quantum computer is at its peak, it can perform many functions such as research new chemical reactions for drugs, mathematical calculations for new computer algorithms and eventually more computer security. These implications will have massive effects on our daily lives: it’s only a matter of time. Before we end this episode I wanted to address the COVID-19 crisis that is ongoing right now. The reason why this episode wasn’t on it was because the media is currently talking a lot about coronavirus and I thought we needed a break. I do want to remind all of you to keep washing your hands and practice social distancing: it’s very important. See you next month.
