Australia’s Wildfires – 90SS Ep. 5

Play episode

Australia has been battling a wildfire since the summer of 2019. Scientists have said that the smoke cloud coming from the fires will circle around the Earth and come back to New South Whales, where the fires are worst. The fires are the first signs of the severity that climate change is, which is largely credited for starting the fires. These fires can be as small as a small pocket of residential areas to a large rural field. During the summer, the climate in Australia was so dry and hot that the chance of a wildfire starting was almost 100%. So far, 17.9 million acres have been burned with 1 billion animals dead including: koalas, kangaroos, wombats and many more. Thankfully, many animals that are spread across the country are less likely to go extinct, however small more localized animals are more likely to face extinction or even go extinct. The fires are expected to continue throughout January and February, Australia’s hottest months. According to scientists, the wildfires have contributed to 900 million tons of CO2, which double the amount of the average yearly emission in Australia. One of the biggest solutions given by scientists, politicians, YouTubers and Greta Thunberg is to plant trees. Experts now say that we need to plant about 353 billion trees for the Earth to not feel the effects of climate change in the long run.
