AR – 90SS Ep. 10

Hello Everyone and welcome back to 90ss, I’m Michael Tung and I will be your host today. For this month, we will talk about Augmented Reality or AR. Most people have seen or used this kind of technology, but don’t know what it is called. AR allows for you to visualize fake objects and things into the real world. For example, when you want to do home remodeling you can visualize a couch in your living room by literally seeing the couch in your exact living room from your phone or device. But aside from Pokemon Go and home renovation, AR has spurred into many different parts of STEM. For example, navigation systems in cars can be programmed in a way so that when you make a turn, there are arrows on screen that show which turn you should take. It can also be used in the medical field for surgeons to practice surgery on a replica of their patient and perfect their skills before they operate on the real person. Although there is a growing market for AR, it is still very much in early stages, so there are some downsides to using AR technology. For example, right now, there are not many apps that use AR to help the average daily tasks, and even large scale ARs used by big companies have relatively small bandwidths, making them slower and less crisp to the eye. Even with the drawbacks though, engineers and software developers know that the system will improve rapidly over the next couple of years and will be a big market and player to the average person’s life.
